How to choose a comfortable bicycle saddle for commuting?

Here's a practical guide to picking the right commuter saddle:
1. Riding Position Matters Most
Upright position (city/hybrid bike): You need a wider, more cushioned saddle since your weight shifts to your sit bones
Forward/aggressive position (road bike): A narrower, flatter saddle works better to prevent inner thigh chafing
2. Measure Your Sit Bone Width
Visit a local bike shop to measure — or sit on a piece of cardboard and measure the indentations
Add ~20–25mm to your sit bone width for the ideal saddle width
3. Padding Levels
Short commutes (under 30 min): More padding is fine and comfortable
Longer commutes (30+ min): Moderate padding is better — too much foam compresses and creates pressure points
4. Look for a Center Cutout or Channel
Relieves soft tissue pressure on longer rides — especially important at 100 kg where weight distribution is a key factor
5. Consider Saddle Shape
Flat saddles: More freedom of movement, good for varied terrain
Curved saddles: More support when sitting in one position, ideal for upright commuters
6. Material
Foam/gel: Best for casual commuting — immediately comfortable, no break-in needed
